- Interventions and measures already carried out:
- At the intersection of Highway 1 and national road 1134 (the intersection from Highway 1 to the M1 Eagle’s Nest Lake rest area and the Páty access road), provide a separate lane for right and left turns in the direction of Highway 1 by demolishing the drop island and resurfacing it, and painting a speed bar on Highway 1 to help with classification.
- Converting the M1 motorway slip road from the Sasfészek lake rest area towards Budapest (junction 10556) to two lanes to avoid congestion on road 1134 during peak periods.
- Improvement of the profile of Tábor street from Biatorbágy Katalinhegy towards Páty, improvement of the road’s traffic condition.
- Painting of pavement signs on the Dózsa György road branch at the junction of main road No. 1 – Dózsa György – Nikoletta street to help vehicles turning straight and left and right to stand up.
- On the road 8101, a no entry sign has been installed from Herceghalom at the roundabout of road 1, except for the destination and between 6 and 9 o’clock with an additional sign. The aim of the measure is to avoid congestion on the M1 motorway and on the 1 road in case of congestion, so that vehicles passing through the M1 motorway and the 1 road looking for an “escape route” do not have to avoid the congestion via Biatorbágy.
- Further actions and interventions planned:
- The repair of the traffic light detector loops at the junction of Highway 1 – Dózsa György – Nikoletta Street and the review of the programme plan have been completed. In addition, cameras for traffic monitoring and traffic counters have been installed. The traffic counters are capable of detailed traffic counts by branch. The purpose of the recalculation of the traffic counts is to get an overview of the traffic data rearranged as a result of the closure of the 81106 road between Páty and Biatorbágy and to review whether there is still enough room in the programme to facilitate the connection of the Biatorbágy centre to the main road 1 and to reduce congestion.
- We are also examining the possibility of improving the permeability and capacity of the roundabouts operating on Highway 1 from the above mentioned junction towards the capital, in order to reduce or, in favourable cases, eliminate the backflow effect experienced at roundabouts in the morning hours. The following intervention options are identified.
- On the main direction of the roundabout junction Mészárosok útja – Tormásrét utca – (Vendel Park) of the main road No. 1 towards Budapest, it is currently possible to enter the road in one lane and exit it in one lane. In order to increase the throughput capacity, the entry and exit will be dual-lane while ensuring the safe co-movement of traffic flows. Once the necessary plans have been drawn up, the roundabout will be converted as soon as possible.
- A 40m minimum following distance sign will be installed on the M1 motorway towards Budapest in the uninterchanged lane from the Sasfészek lake rest area to assist vehicles entering the motorway at a speed limit of 60 km/h. A “Road Control” information sign will also be placed on the motorway before the slip road.
- The work on the Biatorbágy driveway has been accelerated in order to temporarily open it to traffic as soon as possible.
- Interventions proposed by local government and NGOs:
- An alternative to the Biatorbágy slip road was the construction of a temporary slip road by extending László Verebély Street before the exit of the M0 motorway. The available land was examined and it was determined that there was insufficient space between the area purchased for the extension and the area of railway line 1, so the construction was not feasible.
- We have not previously considered the possibility of a temporary driveway through land parcel 027/16 Biatorbágy, but we have done so in relation to this proposal. The driveway would need to be connected to a high embankment, which would require careful design and construction work, and a permit procedure would need to be carried out. At the same time, because of the private nature of the construction, the implementation of the solution will take a considerable amount of time, and it will not be possible to complete the procedure and carry out the construction work before the Biatorbágy driveway is opened.
- A proposal was made to lift the ban on freight traffic on the relocated lane, which would help the classification of driveways in the Budapest agglomeration. In order to implement this intervention, the length of the exit and return at the beginning and end of the diversion should be examined, as it should be made suitable for freight traffic. This interlacing could cause a serious risk of accidents, which is why this design is not supported by the designer or the contractor.
- We have received a request from the public to ban heavy vehicle traffic on the section of Highway 1 between Tatabánya and Budapest. The measure was taken in November and the 7.5t limit signs were installed.
