M1 CONSTRUCTION DAILY #42 – Building bridges day and night

The widening of the M1 motorway will require the construction of 72 overpasses or underpasses, because the widened track would not fit under the existing structures. Work is currently underway on 3/4 of the bridges.

In the area of Nagyegyháza – from the Óbarok rest area towards Tatabánya – the bridge structure has already been concreted.

The most spectacular phases of the work are carried out at night with minimal traffic restrictions, because this is when, for example, the bridge girders can be safely lifted.

We now show you a timelapse of the work that the technicians have to do, in fast motion. How the work is carried out day and night.

The crane arrived on site the night before the work, where they started the installation, which was a 2-hour process. Between 10 pm and 5 am, the most spectacular phase took place: 5 bridge girders, each weighing 36 tonnes, had to be lifted into place with millimetre precision.

Motorists on the M1 motorway can now drive under the new bridge at Nagyegyháza and Óbarok.

In January, 89 sites are or were working on sections to be extended. Despite the winter weather and the hard frosts, 1500 of our colleagues are working every day on and off the main line.

We carry out 23 road works, 7 temporary traffic engineering works, 53 bridge works, 4 hydraulic works and 2 environmental works.

Some of these are tasks that may not always be visible to road users from the main line, but are important to complete so that the next phases of the extension can get underway.

The following animation will help you understand the timing and workflow to get from the original traffic pattern to the new widened lane and what the 2+1+1 diversion is:
