700 km of road resurfaced — a response to the news of the past few days

The report published in the press, claiming that our Company did not deliver technical content commensurate with the amount received, is untrue.

In addition to operations and development projects, our Company has, in recent years, carried out Hungary’s largest motorway resurfacing programme on the roads under its management. As part of this, by 2025 it will have replaced the road surfacing on approximately 700 km (13 million square metres) of the main carriageway nationwide, where this was necessary in several layers; replacing not only the top wearing course but also the underlying binder and base courses. To this end, it used 2.5 million tonnes of asphalt over three years, whilst also refurbishing 315 bridges and 68 rest areas. We issued a summary press release on this in December and, over the past few years, have kept the public informed about the work carried out through our various platforms, using photos and videos (all of which can be found on the Company’s online platforms)

According to data from the National Road Data Bank, which is independent of us, since the concession began on 1 September 2022, the proportion of roads with surfacing less than five years old on the network operated by MKIF Zrt. has nearly tripled, whereas in 2022 only 24.6 per cent were between 0 and 5 years old, a figure that rose to 66 per cent by 2025.

By the end of 2025, our company had received a net total of 673 billion forints from the Hungarian State. The concession company has invested the entire sum in the domestic expressway network of over 1,300 km that it manages. MKIF is responsible for 13 motorways and carries out its work at several sites across the country and in 21 engineering departments, employing around 1,200 people. Under the concession agreement concluded with the State, we operate the motorways continuously and to a higher standard than before. Our Company will only receive the full amount specified in the concession agreement if it carries out operations flawlessly and fulfils the terms of the agreement one hundred per cent. In addition to operations, the Concession Company carries out expansion and development works using significant own funds and loans taken out by the Company on market terms. During the 10-year development period stipulated by the concession contract, we are expanding existing motorways by 299 km and constructing 279 km of new expressways. The total value of these projects amounts to several thousand billion forints. Our project currently under construction is the development of the M1 motorway, which is not simply a lane-widening exercise, but involves the demolition of the entire existing carriageway whilst traffic continues to flow, and the construction of a new carriageway. The value of this project alone is greater than the total amount paid to us to date. In parallel with this, preparations are also under way for the development of the M7, M200 and M3 motorways. In addition, several smaller development projects are currently underway, such as the construction of the Kunszentmárton junction and the Monor service area. We work with several hundred contractors on operational, refurbishment and development tasks.

In addition to its operations, development and refurbishment work, MKIF Zrt. has also achieved a number of other successes: among other things, it has expanded the facilities for selective waste collection at rest areas, planted several thousand saplings across the country and replaced more than half of the vehicles in service at its engineering depots with modern ones. This amounts to more than 300 new vehicles. MKIF Magyar Koncessziós Infrastruktúra Fejlesztő Zrt. operates and maintains the existing expressway network, and is responsible for the planning, development and construction of new sections currently under construction. We are committed to ensuring safe and sustainable transport for everyone on the roads we operate.

We also wrote here in December 2025, using data and graphs, about the extent to which the age of the surfacing on the tracks we had taken over for operation, refurbishment and development had been reduced between 2022 and 2025.

The data is based on statistics from the National Road Data Bank, which is independent of us (we have included the graphs, but you can also find them in the Facebook post below):

Mr Tamás Németh, Chief Executive Officer, responded to the news of recent weeks in an interview with HVG:

Tamás Németh, Chief Executive of MKIF Zrt., addressed the criticisms levelled at the concession in detail in the “On Track!” podcast produced by MKIF itself, in the segment entitled “On the Road to the Future – The Leaders’ Vision”. “The duration of concessions typically ranges from ten years up to as long as 80 years. Our concession is not out of the ordinary in this respect, as it is for 35 years,” emphasised the company’s CEO.
