4.5 million square metres of Hungarian motorways renewed this year

This year’s road rehabilitation works on the motorways operated by MKIF Hungarian Concession Infrastructure Development Ltd. have been completed. In 2025, 24% of the main carriageway managed by MKIF Zrt., or 4.5 million square metres, was resurfaced, and where necessary, the deeper structural parts, i.e. the binder and base layers, were replaced.

In total, we used almost 1 million tonnes of asphalt for these renovations. In addition to replacing the pavements, 78 bridges and overpasses and 35 rest areas have also been renewed this year. Work was carried out on 10 motorways this year: the M1, M15, M3, M4, M30, M35, M7, M8, M85, M86. 42% of the work was carried out on the M3, where almost 1.8 million square metres of new pavement was laid, while the second largest number of works, just under 1 million square metres, was carried out on the M1.

This year’s works started in March and were organised so that there would be no diversion or reconstruction on the M7 between the M0 and Balatonvilágos during the holiday period, either towards Budapest or towards Lake Balaton.

This year, MKIF Zrt. not only successfully completed its pavement rehabilitation tasks scheduled for 2025, but also successfully fulfilled its three-year pavement rehabilitation obligation under the concession contract with the state. The largest expressway reconstruction project in Hungary’s history, which included resurfacing, started in March 2023. Over the past three years, more than 2/3 and 70% of the approximately 1,300 km of main track operated by MKIF Zrt. have been resurfaced, 315 bridges and 68 rest areas have been renovated during the large-scale resurfacing and safety resurfacing works.

From 2026, there will also be road renovations on the road network of MKIF Zrt., as the pavements that have deteriorated due to wear and tear will have to be replaced, but the volume of renovations will not be as high as in the last three years. The work is expected to start in the spring, and until then no large-scale resurfacing works are planned in advance on the tracks we operate.

We thank all road users for their patience this year and wish all travellers a Merry Christmas and an accident-free Happy New Year!
