M1 AVIATION DIARY #46 – Spreading the load

Alongside the track, wider embankments are appearing in more and more places, which will be temporarily surfaced in the coming period.

It is expected that in autumn 2026, the 2×2 lane traffic in each direction will be transferred to this already temporarily widened side of the line towards Budapest and the complete demolition of the side towards Győr will start at a depth of 100-120 cm.

During the expansion, millions of cubic metres of earth will be moved, 11 existing junctions will be upgraded and 4 new grade-separated junctions will be built, in addition to embankment widening and notching.

Although our colleagues are constantly working on the mechanical compaction of earthworks, it is also necessary to consolidate the newly constructed earthwork naturally, which is a fundamental process of soil mechanics.

The load causes the pore water content of the soil to be removed, leading to a reduction in volume and an increase in soil strength.

The following animation shows the timing and workflow to get from the original traffic pattern to the new widened lane and what 2+1+1 and 2+2 diversion is:

🌐 We have launched a dedicated website on the M1 extension to provide you with fast and reliable information. Important information is available in 13 languages: possible junction closures, restrictions on rest areas and the current traffic order are also shown on a map.
The site is available here: https://development.mkif.hu/m1

📲 As usual, we will keep you informed about changes to the traffic regime and closures in our information group, which you can join freely via the link below:
