M1 EXPANSION DIARIES #7 – Forum

As a beginning of the M1 motorway expansion, we held a forum for the mayors of the municipalities concerned, the heads of the partner organisations and the region’s MPs, which was attended by more than a hundred people. Participants had the opportunity to ask questions, which were answered in detail by Deputy Chief Technical Officer Tamás Kertesi, Technical Director György Kozári and Communications Director László Szimicsku.

We will also hold information forums for the public in the near future.

The M1 will be expanded by approximately 80 km (78 km, to be more precise), between the M0 and Győr, to 2×3 lanes, with an additional intelligent hard shoulder (ITS) on each side, which can be opened depending on traffic conditions, accidents, rush hour or roadworks.

According to the deadlines specified in the contract concluded with the state, the first phase of the M1 motorway expansion will extend to Bicske, covering a distance of approximately 24 km, with a completion deadline of August 31, 2028. The second phase will extend to the Concó rest stop (at kilometre marker 94), with a completion deadline of August 31, 2029.

2×3 lanes + ITS lane will be constructed on the M1 between the M0 and the M19 junction at kilometre marker 107. But the extension between the Concó rest stop and the M19 junction will only start after 2029, at a later stage. From the M19 junction to the Austrian border, MKIF Plc. will construct 2×2 lanes, also with ITS lanes. The first phase (M0-Bicske) was to be built by the state, but following a contract amendment, it was transferred to MKIF Plc. for implementation, together with the construction of the M100 junction. The construction of the M100 road is not the responsibility of MKIF Plc., but the junction connecting it to the M1 is being built by the Concession Company, at the same time when the expansion of the road takes place.

Preparatory works for the M1 extension started in autumn 2024, and this year MKIF Plc. will start the actual expansion of the track. The preparatory works (test piling, relocation of protected plants, brush and shrub clearance, bomb-tech, archaeological excavations, etc.) have not yet affected traffic on the main line. However, around March, there may already be preparatory works that could partially affect the main line. These are practically the bridges. The widened and extended M1 will not fit under the existing bridges in most places, so they must be rebuilt or demolished and replaced by new ones. For these works affecting the main tracks, we will be working in the inner lanes and diverting traffic to the outer lanes and the hard shoulder. MKIF Plc. will provide timely advance notice of these changes as soon as the schedule is approved. The actual expansion of the main road will also start this year, in several phases.

The expansion of the M1 will be financed by loans and MKIF Plc.’s own resources. The expansion of the M1 is part of a 10-year development period during which, between 2025 and 2034, the M1, M7, and M3 will be extended by 299 km and new motorways will also be built over a length of 279 km.

In future, please only consider news, information, photos and videos published by MKIF Plc. as authoritative sources regarding the expansion of M1, and only share these ones. Thank you!
