On the side of the track heading towards Budapest, the temporary asphalt surfacing to be laid on the already widened embankment is being completed on an increasing number of sections.
In the autumn of 2026, traffic comprising 2×2 lanes in each direction will be diverted to this already widened side of the carriageway heading towards Budapest, with physical separation (meaning that on this side, two lanes will run towards the capital and two lanes towards Győr).
At this point, the complete removal of the track bed leading to Hegyeshalom, to a depth of 100–120 cm, can begin, followed by the construction of the new track once the old one has been removed.
Developing the new traffic management system is a time-consuming process, so our colleagues have already begun preparations over the past few weeks; this is not currently affecting traffic on the track.
On the side of the road heading towards Budapest, concrete separation barriers are being installed continuously, and work is also beginning on painting the temporary road markings. The photos were taken on Friday near Szárliget.
The animation below explains the timetable and the procedures involved in transitioning from the original traffic layout to the new, widened carriageway, as well as what the 2+1+1 and 2+2 diversions entail:

To ensure that information is both reliable and promptly available, we have launched a dedicated website on the M1 motorway extension. Important information is continuously available on this site in 13 languages: any junction closures, restrictions at service areas, and the current traffic arrangements are all marked on a map.
The site can be accessed here: https://development.mkif.hu/m1
As usual, we will provide updates on changes to traffic arrangements and road closures in our information group, which anyone is welcome to join via the link below:

IMPORTANT!
We will ensure that a 2×2-lane carriageway remains available to motorists throughout the entire duration of the expansion works. This means that there will be 2 lanes in each direction, both towards Győr and Budapest.
We have created several merging and transition points on the road between the diverted and non-diverted lanes; in addition, a number of traffic management changes are currently being prepared.
Both cars and lorries can use the motorway at all times!
Thank you for your patience! We’re on track. Together, with you.
