Unprecedented winter weather arrived in Hungary this week. In recent days, temperatures as low as -32.7°C have been recorded on the Bükk plateau.
During the winter road clearance work, between Monday (01.05.) 00.00 and Saturday (01.10.) midnight, our machines spread 9700 tons of salt and 1.1 million litres of solution on the 1300 km of motorway network operated by MKIF Zrt.
In these six days, our planes have travelled a total of 152,000 km, which is the equivalent of 3.8 times around the Earth!
We now have an animation of the 24 hours with the heaviest snowfall. We use GPS data to show you how, where and when the 167 machines involved in the winter relief effort from our 21 engineering stations moved between 14.00 on Tuesday and 14.00 on Wednesday.
These machines have covered 25,000 km in that time. This is three and a half times the distance of the 7,700 km as the crow flies between Budapest and New York; but 592 marathons could be completed in that time.
It is important to note that the video only shows the movement of our machines performing de-icing/salting/searching, i.e. winter clearance tasks, and the data of our road inspector, brigade transport and foreman vehicles, which also participated in operational tasks, are not included (if their mileage is included, all our vehicles covered a total of 43,000 km during this one full day). The machines returned to the engineering station only for refuelling and salt replenishment.
On the MKIF network on Sunday at 10.00:
- the pavement is wet, dry or drying up everywhere,
- visibility is good everywhere,
- temperatures vary between -20 and -3 degrees,
- at 10.00 on Sunday, there is no major congestion or disruption on our roads
- all the roads we treat are well travelled.
Sunday will be windy and partly cloudy with longer and shorter sunny spells. Occasional flurries of snow. Strong gusts of wind from the northwest may be accompanied by snow showers. Temperatures will be around -2 degrees in the early afternoon after -10 degrees in the morning.
We currently have 170 machines on standby across the country, with 25,000 tonnes of road salt and half a million litres of special solutions in our engineering warehouses.
It is important that everyone should continue to drive only with a vehicle in good technical condition, equipped with winter tyres, sufficient fuel and with sufficient driving skills!
