M1 EXPANSION DIARIES #5 – Tree Felling

Unfortunately, the felling of trees alongside the motorway is indispensable for the M1 motorway expansion project. To ensure the smooth running of the works, thousands of cubic metres of wood will have to be felled, without which the widening of the track and the improvement of transport would not be possible.

We are replacing the felled trees with so-called replacement forests of the same size, in a place designated by the state, to ensure that the expansion of the motorway does not reduce Hungary’s total forest area.

The motorway will not be left without a green surface. After the expansion, there will be trees, shrubs and bushes closer to the fence, just as before.

The relocation of protected plants (7 protected and 1 specially protected species), under the supervision of botanists, was already completed in the autumn.

State-owned, recovered timber harvested during the M1 motorway expansion works can be used as social firewood by local governments, churches, church legal entities, charitable NGOs, public benefit organisations, national minority self-governments or health, educational and training institutions free of charge to help them carry out their tasks, and also to distribute them among those in need.

The ownership of the reclaimed timber may be acquired free of charge by submitting a written request to MNV Plc., the owner of the timber, acting on behalf of the Hungarian State, and submitted to MKIF Plc. ([email protected]).

Information on the process and downloadable samples can be found on the website of MNV Plc.:https://www.mnv.hu/ingatlan-portfolio/eljarasi-dokumentumok_ingatlan-portfolio_.

Information on the storage location of the timber to be claimed, about the available quantity and the quality will be provided by MKIF Plc.

Major works of the M1 motorway expansion will start on the main line on 1 September this year at the latest. Preparatory work has been ongoing since last autumn, and we have reported on it regularly and in detail. The M1 motorway will be extended around 80 km long, up to Bicske to 2×3 lanes in three years (until 31 August 2028), and up to the Concó rest stop at kilometre marker 94 in four years (until 31 August 2029). The track will also have one intelligent hard shoulder on each side, which can be opened from the control centre in case of accidents, traffic or reconstruction.
