M1 expansion diaries #1: preparatory works started on the M1 motorway

M1 EXPANSION DIARIES #1

In our new series, we take you behind the scenes of the M1 motorway expansion.

Preparations for the M1 motorway expansion are well underway.

Those of you who have had your eyes open in recent weeks will have seen various machines, drills up to ten metres high, alongside the M1 motorway.

This is no coincidence, since a number of so-called test piling operations have started in the vicinity of the track.

This is necessary because the expansion will require bridges and flyovers to be adapted or completely rebuilt, and in preparation for this, the bearing capacity of the soil in the areas concerned needs to be tested. For the time being, these works do not involve any traffic restrictions.

The bottom line is that the actual work on the M1 motorway expansion will start no later than 1 September 2025. From the M0 highway to the Concó rest stop, about 80 km of motorway will be widened to 2×3 + ITS lanes in 4 years.

In addition to piling, there are many other preparatory works underway, and we will post about these regularly.
