We have switched to winter mode!

Since early November, more than 600 colleagues have been working in 24-hour shifts at 20 operation and maintenance centres across the country to ensure that the 1,237 km of express roads and motorways belonging to us remain usable also in winter.

In addition, 160 trucks are also on standby permanently. If necessary, salt spreaders, snow ploughs and snow blowers can be deployed as well. For the anti-skid activity, we are preparing with 33 thousand tonnes of salt, half a million litres of a special solution and 300 tonnes of granulates.

Even though the weather seems to be reluctant to go into winter mode, we ask you to change your summer tyres for winter tyres and drive by the rules!

HAPA Asphalt – Young Engineers Forum

On Tuesday, 7 November, two of our colleagues, Diána Szigeti and Domonkos Koch, participated as speakers at the HAPA Young Engineers Forum organised for engineers and professionals under 35 years old who have just graduated or graduated a couple of years ago.

During the day, young engineers gave presentations on test methods, engineering solutions, different technologies and pilot projects.

Domonkos held a presentation on the development of the Hungarian motorway network over the past 10 years and future developments, while Diána addressed the use of drones in road operations, which was selected among the top six presentations.

Congratulations to our engineer colleagues!

A truck rescue vehicle, an assistance vehicle and a bus are on standby on the M1 motorway during the reconstruction of the main railway line in Győr

The Hungarian Concession Infrastructure Development Plc. (MKIF Zrt.) has taken another decision to help traffic on the M1 motorway in view of the renovation of the Budapest-Győr railway line. Between 27 October and 17 November, MKIF Zrt. will have a truck rescue vehicle and a 55-passenger bus on standby at the Bicske Motorway Operation and Maintenance Centre at its own expense, continuously (0-24 hours), in case of need, with immediate departure. A technical assistance vehicle will be on duty during the day on the motorway between Biatorbágy and Tatabánya.

MKIF Zrt. announced on 14 October that during the daytime, there will be no pre-planned works on this section in parallel with the railway renovation. MKIF Hungarian Concession Infrastructure Development Plc. has now also decided that there will be no such works at night between Biatorbágy and Tatabánya during this period.

With these decisions and the reorganisation of the M1 renovation works, our Company aims to help traffic flow and make the running of the replacement buses smoother.

MKIF Zrt. wishes you a safe journey!

Diversion installation at night – based on the Swiss model

In Hungary, installing fixed diversions on express roads at night has never been a fashion before. Engineers at our Company have started to develop a methodology based on Swiss examples, and on Thursday we have started the test period.

We also work at night!

As we reported in August, we also work at night on the motorways. What does this mean?

On our busiest sections, we carry out vegetation maintenance, pavement cleaning and whatever else we can do during the night hours, when there is much less traffic.

For the latest information on night work, please visit the www.utinform.hu website.

Please prepare for possible speed limitations around the night work locations! We kindly ask everyone to drive with extra care along the moving diversions!

And we do not stop there. We plan to carry out new types of work at night. These require more planning than ever before. We will report on these soon!

We are on track. Together, with you.

New selective waste containers placed in 45 rest stops from 1 September

After the renovation of the buildings of the rest stops, we have also started to clean up the green areas. So far this year we have removed more than 8 tonnes of illegally dumped litter. Unfortunately, the eradication of unauthorised litter dumps is an ongoing task, as many people do not use the bins, often bringing their waste from home to the rest area.

New, large (1,500 litre) selective waste containers were installed in 45 rest stops from 1 September, so we now collect waste in around half a thousand containers in 123 rest stops across the country. At the new sites, waste is collected every two weeks, and at the older “waste islands”, depending on the speed of filling up, between 4 and 15 times a year. The old bins are intended to collect metal, glass, PET and paper, while those installed in the new locations are used to collect paper and PET.

Many people are not aware of the large municipal waste bins sunk into the ground at rest stops (but only the road operator or the contractor responsible for cleaning the rest stop can put the bagged waste from the small bins into them, together with the litter bags. Rest stop bins are used to collect waste from the travellers).

The frequency of emptying the large collection containers buried in the ground varies between 2 and 12 times per rest stop per month, depending on how quickly they fill up. To prevent further illegal “waste hills”, we also placed half a thousand prohibition signs across the country. The renewal of the green, outdoor environment of the rest stops does not stop there. More details will follow later in the day.

Rest stops to renew as well

A few days ago, we started to address the rest stops along the motorways with the renovation of the Polgári Rest Stop (M3). This year, 8 rest stops will be renewed (on the M3, M35 and M7 motorways), both inside and outside. We will replace the machinery, the internal finishes, the sanitary ware, the doors, the roofs, and the external facades. New furniture will also be installed and, where necessary, new asphalt will replace the old pavements in the car parks and rest areas.

The renovation of the rest stops includes the renewal of the external green environment. Details of this will be reported soon. Renovations will be ongoing from now on. This year alone, we are spending hundreds of millions of forints on the works.

Dashboard cameras in our cars

As an experiment, we have equipped some of our cars with dashboard cameras. So, from 30 August, some of our road patrol, foreman and so-called truck mounted attenuator (TMA) vehicles have been equipped with front and rear dashboard cameras – For everyone’s protection.

In the past year, since MKIF Zrt. took over the operation of 1,237 km of national express roads, our colleagues have suffered 24 accidents. On average, they had an unfortunate incident on the roads every two weeks, mostly caused by careless drivers.

Five of our colleagues have been hospitalised, eight of our road patrol cars have been crashed, and 13 so-called TMAs have been damaged since the 1st of September last year.

The balance and the experience are devastating. Many drivers run into our vehicles without braking, or are so late in noticing our cars on duty with their lights and highly visible orange colour that they are unable to avoid the collision.

Seeing the number of injuries and value of property damage, we decided to install cameras to protect our colleagues and our vehicles. We expect this to improve road safety and driving morale. We hope that the fact that our cars record traffic will bring greater safety for our staff. Thereby protecting their lives, their physical safety and the integrity of our cars.

The expected duration of the pilot project is 4-6 weeks. After evaluating the results, we will decide how to proceed with the programme.

We place a special sticker on our camera-equipped cars that contains a QR code which, if scanned, directs you to our privacy notice. But you can also find it at the following link: https://mkif.hu/adatvedelem/

For legal and data protection issues related to image capture, you can contact our Data Protection Officer at the following e-mail address: [email protected].

We wish you all a safe journey!

Safer premature babies

A drop of blood and 35 seconds – that is all a tiny life can depend on. More babies may survive from today!

Many children are born premature, which can imply complications.

Since 1989, the Peter Cerny Foundation for the Treatment of Sick Premature Babies has been operating its 0-24 premature baby ambulance and transport ambulance service, which has been called out to 92,262 cases.

There were 19,942 cases where the baby needed ventilatory support. For premature babies who need ventilators, it is vital that accurate respirator settings are used to avoid damage to the lungs and nervous system.

That is why we were delighted to hand over the EPOC device, which allows them to control their treatment in the same way as if they were in a neonatal intensive care unit.

Thank you for your tireless work!

The purchase of the equipment was supported by MKIF Zrt. through the Pro Filii Foundation.

1.6 million square metres of Hungary’s express roads already repaved – press release

The levelling up works on the express roads operated by MKIF Hungarian Concession Infrastructure Development Plc. in Hungary, which started in April, have reached the half-way point. By the 1st of August, MKIF Zrt. replaced 312 km of lane length and 1.6 million sqm of worn-out, deteriorated pavement with new asphalt on nine express roads in the country. (Please note that the works data are given in lane lengths. Lane length means that if, for example, a 1 km section of a motorway is completely renewed on both sides and on both (inside and outside) lanes, then a 4 km lane length of the express road section concerned has been levelled up).

The work carried out so far used 200 thousand tonnes of asphalt. In addition to the top wearing layer, the underlying bonding layer was also replaced where necessary. The M1, M3 and M7 motorways saw the most pavement renewal, with around 4/5 of the work done so far on these three motorways. In addition, 36 bridges and flyovers were renewed in the last four months.

In September 2022, MKIF Zrt. took over the operation, maintenance and development of 1,237 km of the expressway network in Hungary. Right at the start, in early October, we repaved 130,000 square metres (corresponding to the size of almost 18 football pitches) of the most critical sections before winter.

Then, in April, we launched the biggest express road renovation in Hungary’s history. It is planned to repave 297 km (2.5 million square metres) this year. The renovation, which we call “levelling up”, will involve 538 km of motorway, expressway over three years. Across the country, 200 bridges and flyovers will be renewed, including four major bridges: the Rába Bridge (M1), the Oszlár Tisza Bridge (M3), the Köröshegy Valley Bridge (M7) and the Pentele Bridge (M8). At 50-60 junctions, the drainage systems and any slope failures will also be fixed.

Furthermore, we will also renovate dozens of rest stops. We will improve the roofs of the buildings and toilets, replace and repair machinery, thus increasing operational safety and simplifying operations. We will also put new furniture in these rest stops, replacing the outdated wooden street furniture. In addition, we will plant trees and place selective waste containers in the rest stops.

Tens of billions of forints are planned to be spent on renovating express roads in 67 locations this year. This of course involves diversions and traffic restrictions. We try to organise the work in time and space to minimise inconvenience. Therefore, we started the whole renovation after Easter, and no levelling up works were planned on the M7 between the capital and Lake Balaton during the holiday period. All diversions will be communicated in a timely and continuous manner via our website, Facebook page and ÚTINFORM.

The works are necessary to ensure that travellers can use the road in good condition. Please follow our website and always check the current traffic situation before departure and plan longer journeys during the renovations.

We kindly ask for your understanding and support during the renovations. We work for you.

MKIF Zrt. wishes you a safe journey!
