This year’s levelling up and major resurfacing works on the roads managed by MKIF Hungarian Concession Infrastructure Development Plc. have been completed. In 2024, we replaced 5.1 million square metres of deteriorated, worn-out pavement with new asphalt, in several layers where necessary. This represents more than 27% of the 1237 km of main road operated by the Company.
We carried out so-called levelling up works on 4 million square metres of the sections taken over for operation and reconstruction on 1 September 2022, where the pavement conditions did not reach the expected technical level. We have also carried out major resurfacing work on a further 1 million square metres to make traffic safer. These works, where it was necessary, affected not only the top wearing course but also the lower binding and base courses, and we used just over 1 million tonnes of asphalt. In addition to replacing the pavements, 131 bridges and flyovers were renewed, including the replacement of the damaged bearings of the Kőröshegy Valley Bridge. This year we also renovated 33 rest stops. We worked on 11 express roads this year: M1, M15, M3, M30, M35, M4, M7, M70, M8, M85, M86.
43% of the renovations took place on the M3 motorway, where nearly 2.2 million square meters of asphalt was renewed. The second largest volume of pavement renovation took place on the M7, where we laid 1.6 million square meters of new asphalt. This year’s work began in March, after the Easter long weekend, and we voluntarily organized it so that there would be no renovations on the M7 between the M0 and Balatonvilágos during the vacation period, to make Lake Balaton more accessible. Furthermore, we did not carry out any work on the M1 motorway in August, so there were no diversions during the increased international transit traffic occurring at this time of the year.
The biggest motorway upgrade in Hungary’s history started in 2023. Last year, 3.6 million square metres of new pavement was laid, representing 19% of the main road. Furthermore, 106 bridges and flyovers were also renovated. Under our concession contract with the state, we will carry out 538 km of levelling up works on 43% of the main road over 3 years, and we will renovate more than 200 bridges and flyovers. We will also repair the drainage systems at 50-60 junctions by autumn 2025.
The levelling up works must be completed by 31 August 2025. Next year, we plan to renovate 3.1 million square metres of damaged, worn-out pavement, repairing and replacing the binding and base layers under the top wearing course where necessary. 40 bridges and flyovers will be renovated and the renovation of the rest stops will continue. Another 30 rest stops are expected to be renovated next year. The work is scheduled to start in the spring. Before, that, no large-scale pavement replacement works are planned on the tracks we operate.
We thank all road users for their patience this year and wish all travellers a Merry Christmas and an accident-free Happy New Year!
