In 2025, our company collected more than 2,340 tonnes of non-hazardous waste from almost 1,300 kilometres of motorway network and nearly 170 rest areas across the country managed by MKIF Zrt.
The weight of the waste collected is equivalent to the weight of an average car weighing between 1800 and 2000 cars. Keeping our environment clean is not just an operational task, it is also a social responsibility!
The amount of waste is not just the rubbish collected along the roadsides: waste – including hazardous and non-hazardous waste – is also generated during maintenance, construction or accident recovery work on our engineering sections, and its professional management is a key part of our operational processes.
Most common types of waste collected in 2025:
- municipal waste: more than 2130 tonnes.
- solid waste: nearly 75 tonnes.
- selective waste: 70 tonnes.
- tyres: 70 tonnes.
- illegal landfills: last year, a total of 29 tonnes of illegal waste was cleared and removed from 22 different sites.
Since last autumn, illegal dumping has been halved, for example at the Szilas stop on the M3, where alone 246 unauthorised dumping incidents have been prevented since then.
We walk the entire main route three times a year to pick up litter from cars.
Cleanliness and sustainability are our shared responsibility! A single discarded bottle or a bag or cigarette butt thrown out of a window is a lot.
Be part of the environmentally conscious community:
- Use the collectors at the rest areas: the small bins and the recycling bins!
- Don’t throw anything out the car window!
- Report illegal rubbish heaps – we’ll take action!
- We work every day to make motorways not only safe, but also RIGHT – but we need RIDE!
A clean road network is not only an aesthetic issue, but also an environmental, sustainability and safety issue.
We have a shared responsibility to keep our motorways and our environment clean!
