1.8 million square metres of Hungary’s express roads already repaved this year
This year’s levelling up works on the express roads operated by MKIF Hungarian Concession Infrastructure Development Plc. in Hungary have reached the half-way point.
By 1 August, we replaced more than 1.8 million square metres of worn out, broken pavement with new asphalt on seven express roads (M1, M15, M3, M30, M35, M4, M7) in 98 different locations of the country. Around 480 km of expressway lanes have been renewed so far this year, including several junction branches and rest areas(Please note that the works data are given in lane lengths. Lane length means that if, for example, a 1 km section of a motorway is completely renewed on both sides and on both (inside and outside) lanes, then a 4 km lane length of the express road section concerned has been levelled up). For this, we used 300 thousand tonnes of asphalt.
¾ of this year’s work have been done on the M7 and M3. On these two motorways alone, we laid 1.4 million square metres of new asphalt. In addition, 72 bridges and flyovers and 9 rest stops were renewed in the last four months across the country.
This year’s levelling up started on 20 March, after the Easter long weekend, and is expected to last until the end of November or early December.
The levelling up, as the biggest road renovation in Hungary’s history, started in 2023 and will last until 2025. This covers 43% of the 1,237 km of the main track we took over for operation, renovation and development. This corresponds to 538 km. During this 3-year period, 200 bridges and flyovers will be renewed and the drainage systems and any slope failures of 50-60 junctions will be fixed. In 2023, 19% of the main track was given new asphalt, and we replaced and repaired not only the top wearing layer where it was necessary but also the underneath bonding layer and deeper structural parts. We plan to renew another 20% of the main track by the end of this year.
Please note that in August, due to increased transit traffic on the M1 and M7 motorways, there will be no asphalt works planned at all in either direction. And on the M7, we have not conducted any work on the M0 towards Lake Balaton since the start of the holiday period between the M0 and Balatonvilágos.
The works are necessary to ensure that travellers can use the road in good condition. Please follow our website and always check the current traffic situation before departure and plan longer journeys during the renovations.
All diversions will be communicated in a timely and continuous manner via our website, Facebook page and ÚTINFORM.
We kindly ask for your understanding and support during the renovations.
We are on track. Together, with you.
