Winter preparedness – data, weather and proposals

This could be the coldest night in a year.

Friday dawn (09.01.2026) will see lows of around -15 °C or below, with some places even below -20 °C.

At night, snow flurries may develop due to locally increasing winds, and from Friday, mixed precipitation, some sleet and heavy minus temperatures are possible.

We are constantly monitoring the weather, and our colleagues are on standby from 0-24 hours to carry out winter clearance tasks according to the weather.

Our staff have been on the ground for the last 24 hours.

Between 17:00 on Wednesday and 17:00 on Thursday, 1,500 tonnes of road salt and 179,000 litres of calcium chloride solution were spread on the 1,300 km of motorway we operate. Both materials are in abundance in our engineering warehouses.

We currently have 170 machines and 200 colleagues on standby at 21 engineering sites. Dozens of machines are currently on the ground.

All of the motorways we operate are dry or salted and passable despite the winter weather! There is no congestion or traffic jams!

It is important that everyone continues to set off with a vehicle in good technical condition, with enough fuel and with the necessary preparation.

  • Before setting off, check: the battery, tyre condition/pressure, coolant level and the window washer’s frost resistance.
  • For longer journeys, have in the car: warm clothes, a blanket, a charged phone, a flashlight, and possibly water and food.
  • Drive more carefully: at a reduced speed, with a greater following distance – in the cold, traction is reduced and reaction times increase! Remember, the car is in contact with the pavement over a surface area of 4 palms. Only these 4 palms can help you slow down and stop safely!
  • Don’t just drive a car through a “gap”: clean all the windows, mirrors and lights too. And also the roof of the vehicle, because the driving wind can carry snow and ice chips off the car towards the car behind!

Please drive according to the current weather, road and visibility conditions! Drive responsibly!
