This week, temperatures are not expected to go above zero during the day, snow will arrive in several waves, and at night there may be hard frosts and localised snow flurries!
Our engineers work non-stop on the motorway network we operate, carrying out preventive snow ploughing, de-icing and snow removal on sections affected by snowfall where the snow layer reaches 3-5 cm.
On the 1,300 km of motorways we operate, 166 machines worked overnight, spreading 2,900 tonnes of road salt and 320,000 litres of special solution. We have plenty of both materials in stock in our engineering warehouses.
Some interesting and important information on winter protection:
- It’s important to stress: we may not be just ahead of you – but we’ve certainly been there, salted the water and will go again if necessary! Our colleagues are constantly working on the field.
- On a lightly trafficked road, the salt starts to exert its melting effect from the bottom up, but to make the road “black” it is also necessary that the traffic “kneading” effect is also exerted on the already sanded road, thus making the road salty.
Passing snowploughs in convoys is FORBIDDEN!
The stretch of road ahead may not have been fully cleared or may have been previously salted. Overtaking at this time can therefore be particularly dangerous: a skid due to acceleration can lead to a serious accident.
In order to ensure proper salting and removal, snowploughs and salt spreaders must not travel at speeds of more than 60 km/h. If they go faster than this, there would be virtually no salt on the road and the snow plough would damage road structures, pavement and possibly vehicles at higher speeds.
Please help us by respecting the Highway Code!
If you’re going on a road trip, plan for longer driving times because of the winter road conditions and have enough fuel in the car if you’re going further afield.
Please drive according to weather, road and visibility conditions:
keep a greater following distance,
slow down if necessary,
Only drive off with a vehicle in good condition and winter tyres!
