Annual bridge measurements and biannual on-site inspections, as well as the results of the spring test lifts, have shown that 3 of the 38 bearings of the Kőröshegy Valley Bridge are badly worn and will soon need to be replaced. This will be the first such intervention (bearing replacement) on the 1872-metre-long bridge built in 2007.
The bearings are special elements of the bridge that allow the controlled movement of the bridge structure, ensuring the stability of the bridge. The structural elements, worn out over the last 17 years, weigh almost 10 tonnes and measure 2*2*0.35 metres each.
The bearing replacement requires a high level precision and can only be carried out on a bridge that is closed to traffic, and at the same time the bridge structure also has to be lifted a few centimetres away from the pillars. So, practically, we are lifting the bridge out of its place.
For this reason, we plan with a 2-week full closure of the Kőröshegy Valley Bridge from 2 September. Considering the summer holiday period, the work has been scheduled for after the start of school to minimise disruption to traffic.
During the motorway closure, the following designated diversion routes must be used:
- Those arriving from Budapest have to exit the motorway at the Zamárdi-Felső / Siófok-Nyugat junction and they can return at Balatonszárszó.
- Drivers coming from the border have to leave the motorway at the Balatonszárszó junction and can return at Zamárdi-Felső / Siófok-Nyugat.
Municipalities have been informed of the bridge closure and diversion routes. In addition, we announced the possible late summer, early September date of the bearing replacement in our April announcement.
Please note that the bearing replacement is a pre-planned work, the bridge is safe and in good condition. Furthermore, in parallel with the replacement, the anti-corrosion coatings on the expansion joints will be renewed in the entire cross-section (in 4 places).
In the levelling up, which started last year, we not only replace broken pavements on 538 km of express roads across the country by 2025 but also renew as many as 200 bridges and flyovers, including several major bridges such as the M7 valley bridge.
Please take care of our colleagues and always check our websites for information on current works before departure.
Thank you for your patience and understanding! We wish you a safe journey!
