M1 EXPANSION DIARY #64 — Rest area expansion

The expansion of the M1 motorway is a system-wide development, so we are not only widening the main carriageway but also, amongst other things, upgrading the service areas and junctions.

Along the 78 km section currently undergoing expansion, we will completely rebuild six rest areas, whilst the remaining rest areas will be expanded and modernised – the family-friendly refurbishments to the rest areas will also be completed.

We are also creating 300 new lorry parking spaces at the service areas along the M1 motorway.

The aerial photographs clearly show the new layout of the Concó rest area and the progress of the works.

At this new, expanded rest area, parking spaces for several buses and 79 lorries will be provided, and the alignment of the surrounding roads will also be altered.

As the widened main carriageway and the slip road would not fit under the existing bridge, a new bridge will be built on a completely new alignment, 100 metres further up, and the old one will be demolished.

Our colleagues are currently carrying out earthworks (excavation and embankment construction), laying geotextile, constructing the base course and carrying out hydraulic works on site.

The animation below explains how we will transition from the original traffic layout to the new, widened carriageway – including the operational arrangements and work processes involved – and what the ‘2+1+1’ diversion entails:

To ensure that information is both accurate and promptly available, we have launched a dedicated website in 13 languages about the M1 extension.

This service provides important and essential information specifically for travelling on the M1, available in multiple languages at all times: any junction closures, restrictions at rest areas and the current traffic arrangements are marked on the map, whilst emergency lay-bys, for example, are also shown on the page via Google Maps.

The page can be accessed here: https://development.mkif.hu/m1

IMPORTANT!

We will ensure that a 2×2-lane carriageway remains available to road users throughout the entire duration of the expansion works. This means there will be 2 lanes in each direction, both towards Győr and Budapest.
Both cars and lorries will be able to use the motorway at all times!
