New intelligent signalling system on the M1 for faster information

The new German-made devices, connected to the system, will help road users with real-time information, adapted to the current traffic situation, via digital signs. This allows drivers to react in time to congestion and slowdowns. The aim is to maintain dynamic traffic flow.

The new system consists of a total of 20 variable message signs and 8 radar detectors. The signs have been placed in front of junctions and interchanges, as well as on the sections before diversions.

The displays will help drivers travelling towards Budapest to choose between the relayed lane and the lanes adjacent to the work area on the sections under widening.

How does it work?

  • The radars monitor traffic in real time and automatically change the signal pattern in case of congestion.
  • The system operates in a fully autonomous way. It works on the basis of a control matrix which always selects the most appropriate combination of signal patterns based on the data received. The matrix currently contains about 300 variations.
  • The radars can monitor vehicle speed and traffic saturation on a lane-by-lane basis. The system not only looks at the current situation, but also takes into account data from the previous period, so it can filter out short-term fluctuations and ensure stable, reliable operation.
  • In addition to the basic functions, the 21st century system also allows manual intervention and the collection and analysis of detailed traffic data. This not only supports current traffic management, but also provides valuable information for operations and improvements in the longer term.

Please observe the variable message signs and drive according to the current traffic situation!
